Environmentally Conscious Wireless

As a nation, we are focused on ways to be more environmentally responsible, and through environmentally-minded wireless use, you can make a positive difference.

In our most recent national survey, we found that the majority of people know their wireless devices and accessories are recyclable, but only 60% of respondents said they have ever recycled or donated an old wireless device or accessory. On top of that, only 36% said they were aware of the fact that their wireless carrier has a “green” program in place to accept used wireless products.

What You Can Do

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), recycling one million cellphones saves enough energy to power more than 185 U.S. households with electricity for a year.

Recycle Your Old Phones

  • All wireless devices and their accessories are recyclable.
  • Every major wireless carrier allows you to bring your old devices and accessories to stores where they will be responsibly disposed.
  • Local governments and communities also organize periodic collection events for used consumer electronics. Some local post offices are even providing free shipping packages for people to recycle their devices.
  • Many handset manufacturers supply packaging to mail your old phone in to be recycled when you purchase a new one.

Donate Your Old Phones to Charity

  • There are a number of organizations that accept cellphone donations and put your old wireless device to use to help those in need (e.g., victims of domestic violence or U.S. troops.)
  • BUT, remember before you recycle or donate, make sure you wipe your personal information from your device!

Choose Efficiency

  • Many of today’s devices are much more energy-efficient and include components made from recycled materials.
  • Battery chargers are also more energy-efficient and reduce the amount of energy wasted through inefficient charging practices.
