Who is Taxing Your Digital Goods?

We’re launching a new video to help wireless consumers understand how their digital goods are taxed. Take a look:

“That can’t be right!”

It shouldn’t be, but it is.

You’ve been there before. You’re out and about when you buy an app on your mobile device. Perhaps you downloaded something to your device when traveling. Whatever the circumstances, it’s possible you could be buying a digital good (an app, song, ringtone, etc.) in a state other than where your phone bill goes. Which state gets to tax you? It could be even more complicated if the company’s headquarters is in one state, and its server in yet another. That means four different states have some hand in your purchase!

Who gets to tax you in that case?

The way the law currently reads, all four could claim they have the jurisdiction.

Educate Yourself and Take Action!

  • Ask your member of Congress to support ‘The Digital Goods and Services Tax Fairness Act,’ legislation that would fix this loophole.
  • Sign up to receive information on wireless issues from MyWireless.org , like us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter for updates.
  • Tell a friend, family member or coworker to join the fight.

Help us make sure that you’re not taxed multiple times for the same digital transaction!

Not to be cynical, but at the end of the video, the guy representing MyWireless.org steals a lollipop. This might be sending the wrong message because MyWireless.org is suppose to help you save money and not steal your money. Am I overanalyzing? It’s only a lollipop.
