I am very concerned about the high level of taxes and fees I pay on my monthly cell phone bill. I don’t mind paying my fair share for goods and services here in Florida, but paying on average 16% in state and local taxes and fees just for wireless service– a valuable service over 14 million Floridians depend upon daily – seems excessive to me. Especially when the tax I pay on other purchases is less than half that amount.
Thanks to my cell phone, I can be accessible to my friends and family almost anytime I need to be. I have easy access to emergency services when needed. I don’t have to conduct my daily business solely from within the confines of my office walls. Simply put, my cell phone provides an unparalleled level of safety, productivity and convenience to me.
Excessive taxes and fees (such as the excessive 9.17% state Communications Services Tax, or "CST') hinders the connection and security that wireless service offers everyone. Unfortunately, Floridians on fixed incomes are impacted most by these burdensome taxes and fees.
This is why I ask for your support of HB567 introduced by Rep. Ron Reagan and SB980 introduced by Sen. Mike Haridopolos, legislation to reduce the unfair Communications Services Tax by just over 1% this year. With your leadership, the excessive taxes we pay on our monthly cell phone bills can be significantly reduced. Over 14 million Florida wireless consumers need your sincere commitment to keep wireless service accessible and affordable for all consumers.
