I have recently learned that if the proposed "Phone Tax" were to become law, Cook County would have the highest tax rate on wireless service in the entire country. I am writing to you today to ask that you please vote 'NO' on the proposed “Phone Tax,” which is a new monthly telecommunications tax hike on all residents in our county. Please stand up for nearly 4 million fellow Cook County wireless consumers like myself, and protect the quality, the value and the convenience we have all come to expect every day from our communications services here in Illinois.
As you probably know, wireless consumers right here in Cook County already pay more than our fair share each month in combined federal, state and local taxes and fees, paying on average 16% on every phone bill. As if that wasn't enough, now I hear that some County Commissioners in Cook County are considering adding additional new taxes to all wireless and landline phone bills! Frankly Commisioner, additional new taxes are egregious to consumers and harmful to low and moderate-income families around our state.
Cook County’s families and businesses need affordable and accessible wireless services to keep our state safe, connected and prosperous. The proposed “Phone Tax,” or any other new telecommunications fees for that matter, will instead raise consumer costs, stifle innovation, and threaten the freedom, mobility and safety we all enjoy with our wireless service every day.
Commissioner, I am asking you today to please take a pro-consumer stand for all residents in Cook County, and make a difference on my behalf, alongside the nearly 4 million other wireless consumers that benefit from the freedom and accessibility that wireless service currently provides. The proposed “Phone Tax” seeks to implement an unfair $4 telecommunications tax increase per-month ($48 per-year) that is simply wrong for all Cook County communications consumers, and wrong for local business in our state. I vehemently oppose this attempt, and I ask that you also strongly oppose this measure at this time.
