Keep Access to the Internet Tax-Free!

THANK YOU CONGRESS AND THE PRESIDENT for keeping access to the Internet tax-free, like it should be, through the year 2014.

The good news is that for nearly a decade, so far national lawmakers have successfully protected Internet access from getting burdened by federal taxes, helping to ensure that all Americans have easier access to this incredible and ever-evolving resource. A bi-partisan Congress was recently able to avert any bad news for wireless and Internet consumers this fall, as they extended for 7-years the law that keeps Internet access tax-free. This law was set to expire on November 1, 2007, but tens and thousands of wireless consumers across the country spoke up, and your national lawmakers listened!

Legislation was introduced this year in both houses of Congress to keep taxes off Internet access. While ultimately the 'Permanent Internet Tax Freedom Act of 2007' was overwhelmingly bi-partisan legislation -- a bill that would have kept taxes off Internet access permanently, as well as preventing multiple and discriminatory taxes on electronic commerce -- a 7-year extension of the Internet tax ban was a critical first step to protect consumers.

Wireless consumers want to keep access to the Internet tax-free, for good. Over 71% of America's more than 260 million wireless consumers favor an eventual permanent ban, and Congress should ensure that Internet access and Internet commerce are not subject to multiple state or local taxes in the future. Congress should protect American consumers, and work with the President to achieve the bi-partisan goal of ensuring affordable Internet access and commerce benefits to all Americans. Our national lawmakers should prevent taxes that limit consumer choice, delay innovation, and often require consumers to pay more for service.
