FairPoint is asking the Maine Public Utilities Commission to approve a TENFOLD increase in the amount you pay into the Maine Universal Service Fund (USF). The total amount of the increase is $67 million per year for the purpose of supporting one landline phone company – FairPoint. If approved, every phone user in Maine would be required to pay $60 per year in new taxes on each of their phone bills. If you are concerned and don’t want to subsidize FairPoint’s business, there is a bill in Augusta – LD 1479 – that would give the Legislature the ability to limit any proposed increase.
Write your elected officials and ask them to act NOW to halt any increase in the Maine USF! Ask them to support LD 1479 and stop this tax hike!
