MyWireless.org® in 2006

In 2006, MyWireless.org engaged in several states from New York to Oregon, fighting on behalf of consumers to lessen discriminatory wireless taxes and to defeat costly and complicated regulations on wireless services.

Hundreds of thousands of wireless consumers and hundreds of dedicated coalition partners across the country have joined MyWireless.org in making wireless more affordable and accessible for all Americans. However, there is much more to do in cities and states across the country, as new wireless taxes and regulations pop up every day. And in the nation’s capital, telecom laws are constantly under consideration – and 2006 was a busy year.

Below is a brief snapshot of MyWireless.org activity in 2006:

  • Assisted in stopping a proposed 1 percent tax hike on wireless consumers in Maine.

  • Helped fight costly and complicated regulations on wireless services in Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York.

  • Worked closely with coalition partners to defeat proposed wireless tax increases in Portland, Oregon.

  • Fought against unfair “Gross Receipts Tax” double-taxes on wireless in Pennsylvania and South Dakota.

  • Launched campaign to reduce the excessive Communications Services Tax on wireless in Florida.

  • Using the simple 'take action' tools at MyWireless.org, consumers generated over 165,000 emails and over 8,000 phone calls to federal legislators in just 8 months in 2006, calling for one fair, consistent national policy for wireless and for a 3-year state and local wireless tax freeze to be included in the Senate communications bill.

  • MyWireless.org mobilized consumers to help win a swift and certain transition to Digital Television (DTV), which was signed into law by President Bush in 2006. Consumers across the country will continue to benefit from expanding wireless technologies.

  • America’s wireless consumers sent more than 140,000 personalized messages to federal policymakers through MyWireless.org, and successfully helped to eliminate the 3 percent Federal Excise Tax (FET) on monthly wireless bills. Read More
