MyWireless.org® Activity in 2007
In 2007, MyWireless.org® engaged in numerous state campaigns across the country, focused primarily on fighting new wireless taxes or lessening existing ones, and defeating state-based wireless “consumer protection” legislation. Last year, MyWireless.org® scored major victories for wireless consumers in Texas, Michigan, Cook County, IL, and in Prince George’s County, MD. These wins will save wireless consumers an estimated $500 million dollars in new and regressive taxes.
More than 1 million wireless consumers and numerous coalition partners across the country have now joined MyWireless.org® to get informed about the “state” of their wireless, and to fight unfair and excessive state wireless taxes and regulations. However, this battle has only begun – there is much more to do across the country in 2008. MyWireless.org® continues to inform and empower consumers to impact the wireless policies that affect them, their businesses, and their families. Below is a brief snapshot of MyWireless.org® state activity 2007:
- MW led a winning statewide campaign to repeal the unfair Telecommunications Infrastructure Fund “TIF” fee on all landline and wireless consumers in Texas. This key victory will save consumers over $600 million dollars over the next three years!
- MW worked closely with local and national coalition partners to defeat the proposed $4 “Phone Tax” introduced by the Cook County, Illinois, County Council President.
- MW worked with local coalition partners and county residents to ensure that any unfair increase of the “Sales and Use Tax” on all Prince George’s County landline and wireless consumers must be approved by residents on a 2008 ballot.
- MW generated thousands of wireless consumer emails and phone calls to targeted elected officials in Lansing, Michigan to successfully defeat a regressive $0.81 “Phone Tax”.
- MW continued to fight against costly “consumer protection” legislation in Hawaii, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota and Oregon.
- MW survey research helped defeat or shelve proposed “cell phone lemon law” and E-9-1-1 wireless tax increase legislation in Georgia, Illinois and Tennessee.
