Misused fees lead state to lose federal funds
Every time someone in Georgia purchases a prepaid cellphone, a fee is tacked on to the purchase. Under state law, the money - more than $15 million raised thus far - is supposed to pay for improvements at 911 call centers around the state. The state can’t say how much of the collected fees goes where, and that’s the problem. Read more
